Long ago in the mists of antiquity, a large and powerful tribe of nomadic yak herders roamed the grasslands of northern China. Conflicts within the tribe, and the never-ending search for new grazing lands, impelled a branch of this tribe to set off on a lengthy migration south.
Eventually they arrived at Gold Sand River, on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River in southwestern China, and settled in the highlands of Jade Snow Dragon and Heba Mountains.
Amid the Haba Snow Mountains, 120 kilometres to the southeast of Zhongdian County, is a stretch of crystal terrace. The Baishuitai Terrace means "a growing flower", and the Dongba culture explains that the color of white presents auspiciousness and sanctity. On the eighth day of the second lunar month, when the mountains surrounding Baishuitai Terrace are festooned with flower blossoms, the Naxi people come to worship this sacred site. Dressed in their holiday best, they sing and dance to celebrate this ethnic festival.
